Southern Stone Adventure!

Troop 60 Scouts had a vertical adventure at the Southern Stone indoor climbing gym in Lafayette, La during their overnight lock-in.

After safety briefing and instruction, each Scout had the opportunity to belay and to climb under supervision before being released to explore the huge climbing gym.

Scouts earned their Climbing Merit Badge, ate much pizza, and had a well-padded floor to sleep on when they finally conked out after midnight. What a blast!

Please remember there is no Troop meeting Thursday, March 29th because the Parish schools are out for Spring Break. See you back in April!

March 22 Meeting

What an exciting meeting! We welcomed a new Scout, Cody! Then, after our District Executive Tanya Broadway presented Friends of Scouting to the assembled parents, Mark led the Scouts in further work on their hammock suspension whoopie slings and dog bones.

Then, drums began to pound, and the Troop filed out for the Order of the Arrow Call Out.

Congrats to the newest inductees, Austin, Caleb, Jacob, and Mark!

Gentle reminders about our outing Friday to Southern Stone: pack lightly and wear suitable clothing, and please don’t be late to our departure!

Last Week

Last week the Scouts broke into their new patrols, this time deciding on their names (the Barracudas and the Penguins) and their Patrol Yells. Melanie handed out cloth rank advancements and merit badges, and we will properly celebrate those accomplishments in our June Court of Honor.

A brief erratum message: the Southern Stone registration form is due this Thursday, March 15th, with payment, not on Wednesday. Forms can be found in our “Forms and Files” link above.

Flag Ceremony at the American Legion Oratorical Contest

Today, Troop 60 Scouts raised the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance at the state American Legion Oratorical Contest Finals today on the NSU campus. They then enjoyed listening to the regional winners as they gave their speeches about various aspects of the US Constitution. The student winner earned a $1500 scholarship and the opportunity to represent Louisiana at the national contest. It was an inspiring day!

Thanks to the American Legion for inviting Troop 60 to participate in this important event.

Troop Leadership Elections

Troop 60 held leadership elections tonight. Candidates had the opportunity to speak for one minute about why they were well-suited for various positions, and then the Scouts voted by secret ballot. JP was elected SPL and Trey and Caleb were elected PLs. Additional leadership positions were selected and assigned to fill the leadership roles in the troop and patrols.

Gentle reminders: this SUNDAY, March 4th, Troop 60 is doing the opening flag ceremony at the American Legion Oratorical Contest. Please arrive at Magale Recital Hall on the NSU Campus at noon for instructions. Wear your full Class A uniform and be ready to represent your Troop and Boy Scouting! The ceremony should only last a few minutes, but Scouts are welcome to stay and watch the Louisiana district winners compete for a scholarship by speaking about the US Constitution.

Also, a flyer went home about the Southern Stone climbing overnight event coming up. If you didn’t receive one, please visit the Forms and Files link and return a form with payment by March 14th. This should be a great trip!
